Powers From The Past vs. The Red King

Because Power Rangers is a show built off Japanese footage, I always thought it would be interesting to compare the show with its Super Sentai counterpart and see just exactly how similar, or dissimilar, both shows are. With Dino Charge debuting, I figured now would be the perfect time to start doing that. I haven't watched much of Kyoryuger; I plan to watch and analyze each episode as Dino Charge episodes come out. My idea is to find comparisons between both shows and be able to specify which episodes. But it is likely I will start watching a good amount of Kyoryuger episodes ahead of time just in case corresponding Power Ranger episodes skip-around. 

After watching the first episode of Dino Charge, "Powers From The Past," I watched the first episode of Kyoryuger, expecting a lot of similarities. Surprisingly, there aren't many. This is something I'm very happy about. I felt like MegaForce and Super MegaForce relied too heavily on Sentai footage and never really developed their own story. This specific blog post will mostly deal with the differences between the opening episodes of Dino Charge and Kyoryuger. If by watching Kyoryuger episodes ahead of time I happen to discover footage that was used in Dino Charge episodes already blogged about, I will make additional and "update" blogs.

The Dino Charge episode opens with a spaceship scene, shows some villains on the ship, and then reveals this character, Poisandra, who is also seen in the first episode of Kyoryuger.

In Kyoryuger, Poisandra is known as "The Chevalier of Joy Candelira"

The Kyoryuger episode opens with the rising of a "Deboss Army" in various parts of the world. In the Island of the South Sea, one man, nicknamed King, fights them off.

In Dino Charge, this guy, Master Sledge, is in search of the Energems. He has not yet been seen in Kyoryuger, though the minion he sends out to search on his behalf, has been.

This little guy, Keeper, appears to be completely new and created just for Dino Charge.

This guy, sent by Master Sledge, is in search of the Energems and picks up the scent of Keeper. He was seen in Kyoryuger.

In Kyoryuger we see this villain's origin: being awakened from some sort of cryogenic chamber, something Dino Charge may be skipping completely. He is "The Chevalier of Anger Dogold"

Dino Charge reveals a lot of monsters in cells. I had assumed this was footage taken from Sentai, but if it was, it didn't appear in the first episode of Kyoryuger. The story behind this is that they are "outlaws" and Master Sledge is collecting them for bounty.

In Dino Charge, Keeper takes the Energems and fuses them with dinosaurs so that they stay safe.

It has not yet been revealed in Kyoryuger how the Energems have fused with dinosaurs.

Instead of Keeper, the mentor figure in Kyoryuger appears to be Wise Deity Torin.

The Red Ranger discovers his Energem in a cave, mistaking it for a crystal.

One commonality between the episodes is the "Monster Of The Day," if that applies even though there was no Megazord fight. This same monster is seen in episode 1 of Kyoryuger, though I believe they simply reused the costume and shot new footage for this. Notice the background is a forest.

The same Monster Of The Day appears in the episodes, though again only the costume was reused. As you can see by the background, Kyoryuger has the monster in a city, whereas in Dino Charge he was in the forest.

In Dino Charge, Tyler and Shelby first make contact with their Energems as they fall out of a crate.

Then their revolvers magically appear in their other hands, a result of holding the Energems.

In contrast, in Kyoryuger the red ranger receives his GabuRevolver from Wise Deity Torin.

Back to Dino Charge, Tyler discovers that the Energem fits inside the revolver. One important difference to note is that in Kyoryuger, instead of Energems they have "batteries."

Through the revolvers they morph for the first time, which again appears to be original footage. The rangers are very surprised that they just morphed.

In Kyoryuger, Daigo is much more aware of morphing, or as they call it, Kyouryuu Change, and does it with intent.

Another difference: in Kyoryuger five people already have powers, whereas in Dino Charge only the pink and red rangers have received powers.

The T-Rex zord appears in Dino Charge and takes care of the Monster Of The Day, and he also appeared in the Kyroryuger episode, though again not the same footage.

The appearance of the T-Rex zord in Kyoryuger, named Gabutyra, is to attack the Debossy Army in the beginning of the episode, and then appears towards the end of the episode to aid in a fight that takes place in the city.

Another similarity we should draw here: Red Dino Charge Ranger Tyler has a journal that belonged to his dad, who disappeared 10 years ago on an expedition.

In Kyoryuger, the Red Ranger, Daigo, has a necklace that belonged to his father. They traveled the world together. Just like in Dino Charge, his father also disappeared.


Overall I would say the creative team working on Dino Charge did a very good job in making an original story. Though they are borrowing some elements, such as a missing father, presence of a T-Rex zord and the same monster, the back stories appear, so far, to be unique to their own. Different mentors, different settings and different origins are some of the things that seem to be making Dino Charge much different than Kyoryuger.
